South America and some of Central America on the North American continent

South America is largely in the Southern Hemisphere and is often referenced as a subcontinent of the Americas in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. It is well known for its extremes in geography from the high mountains of the Andes to the Amazonian rain forests.

Did you know that the Amazon is now considered the longest as well as the largest in terms of volume of any river on Earth? That is correct, as recent data now says the Amazon is actually 65 miles longer than the Nile. One pundit attributed that to be true if you take the long way around the island of Marajó in the Amazon delta of Brazil.
